A TRIBUTE TO A TRUE GRENADIAN/CARIBBEAN HEROINE: JOAN VENTOUR, JP

By Gerry Hopkins JD | Jan. 9, 2022

REST IN PEACE SISTER JOAN VENTOUR, JP — a wife to one; a mother and a sister to many; a true community leader and organizer, who was also an indelible source of inspiration and guidance to several, including myself; and also one who worked with and accommodated many who couldn't afford prescribed medications at her pharmacy in Grenville, St. Andrew, Grenada.

After Joan's niece, Gemma Belmar, died due to the October 19th, 1983 massacre that was carried out on Fort Rupert, my friendship with Joan and her other nieces, was instrumental in enabling me to recite a poem I had written as a tribute to Gemma (my classmate in 5th Form at St. Joseph's Convent Secondary School in Greenville, St. Andrew, Grenada), at Gemma's funeral at the Birchgrove R.C. Church.

Additionally, Joan was a great source of encouragement and support in my initiative to successfully write and publish a book, Grenada Topples the Balance, as a 16-year old. That book was about the tumultuous events of October 1983, which culminated in the military intervention of the United States.

Joan's work in every aspect of the lives of the people of Birchgrove, La Baye, the parish of St. Andrew and of the Grenadian community at large, would never be forgotten.

To all of the Belmars and Ventours, I extend my deepest condolences.

Sis. Joan Ventour, may your soul rest in peace, while we celebrate your life and emulate your legacies of service to humanity, your progressive thinking and your positive and decisive actions, which manifested your faith in God and your love for people.

Sincere condolences to the Ventour and Belmar families.
Sister Joan was a strong community figure and would be missed by many many Grenadians.
She was a pillar of the Birch Grove catholic community, and dedicated a ton of effort toward the reconstruction of the church after it was damaged by hurricane winds.
May her blessed soul Rest In Peace.
